Top 5 Movies To See This Holiday Season
Aside from all the gift giving, family time spent together and days off from work, the holiday season is a great time to see a hit movie in theaters. It seems the biggest studios are releasing the hottest blockbusters during either the holiday or summer seasons. In the next couple of months there will be an outburst of films hitting the silver screen, and BBIMI is giving you a look at the top 5 movies to see in theaters this holiday season.
5. The Hobbit
Director: Peter Jackson
Notable Cast: Martin Freeman, Ian McKellen, Richard Armitage
Release: December 14, 2012
The Buzz: The Hobbit is facing a divided audience upon its release. First it was Peter Jackson’s decision to shoot the two films at 48 frames per second (a hyper-realistic format that was questioned from the onset), then the announcement that a third movie would be added. This series of events didn’t seem to shake the core fans who consider Jackson’s adaptations of J.R.R. Tolkien’s work to be sacred, but it’s hard to predict how the larger, general audience will react after opening weekend. (via IMDb)
4. Gangster Squad
Director: Ruben Fleischer
Notable Cast: Sean Penn, Ryan Gosling, Emma Stone
Release: January 11, 2013
The Buzz: For his new movie Ruben Fleischer makes a wise directorial move away from action comedies and goes back to the midcentury for a hard-boiled crime drama with a fine ensemble cast. Its an awards friendly release date, but I’m thinking this will find its true success with audiences here and abroad. (via IMDb)
3. Les Miserables
Director: Tom Hooper
Notable Cast: Hugh Jackman, Russell Crowe, Anne Hathaway
Release: December 25, 2012
The Buzz: Director Tom Hooper goes further back in history for his follow up to “The King’s Speech”, opting for the latest cinematic take on Victor Hugo’s novel, what could be the second best adaptation after Raymond Bernard’s exhaustive 1934 work. Before cameras rolled, the project has been positioned as a seemingly unbeatable Oscar candidate. (via IMDb)
2. Django Unchained
Director: Quentin Tarantino
Notable Cast: Jamie Foxx, Don Johnson, Leonardo DiCaprio
Release: December 28, 2012
The Buzz: This December is stacked with the sort of fare that could stand up to any summer blockbuster. And while last year’s “The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo” was an indication that holiday audiences might not warm to violent content, an original Quentin Tarantino is in a different league than a David Fincher adaptation. It’s about a slave-turned-bounty hunter who sets out to rescue his wife from a brutal Mississippi plantation owner. (via IMDb)
1. Zero Dark Thirty
Director: Kathryn Bigelow
Notable Cast: Christ Pratt, Jessica Chastain, Joel Edgerton
Release: December 21, 2012
The Buzz: Kathryn Bigelow’s never known the level of controversy her follow-up to “The Hurt Locker” has generated. Even before cameras rolled on the recreation of the events leading up to the killing of Osama bin Laden, a government watchdog group has filed a lawsuit against the CIA and the Department of Defense since details of the reported meeting between the agencies, Bigelow, and writer Mark Boal have not been released via the Freedom of Information Act.
