Sports Update Monday: Fins Beat Pats, Panthers Go Streaking & Jameis Wins Heisman
It was a very busy week and weekend in South Florida sports last week, that’s why BB Insurance Marketing is giving you the low down on all the sports stories in your hometown from last week. The Dolphins beat the Patriots, the Panthers rattle off a 3 game win streak, and FSU’s Jameis Winston wins the Heisman. So check out this week’s sports stories, courtesy of BBIMI!
Tannehill Channels His Inner Tom Brady
The Dolphins are playing their best football at the most important time. They’ve won four of five games and will be favored in their final two — next week in Buffalo and then in the finale against the New York Jets. Led by the flawless play of Ryan Tannehill, the Dolphins upset the New England Patriots 24-20 for the first time in 4 years. Tannehill threw 3 touchdowns for 312 yards, the most important touchdown was with 75 seconds left and it would be the eventual game winner. After relentless attempts from the New England offense, the Dolphins managed to thwart any late-game heroics from Tom Brady and the Patriots by picking Brady off in the end zone. If the Dolphins can win out, they will be in the playoffs for the first time in 5 years!
The Panthers had more than just Scott Clemmensen trying to keep the puck out of the net in the final five-plus minutes on Sunday’s game against Montreal. Thanks to players like Mike Weaver, Dmitry Kulikov, Brian Campbell and Jesse Winchester getting in the way, the host Canadiens didn’t register a shot in the final 5:27 as Florida held on for a 2-1 win at Bell Center. Florida has won three straight and five of six for the first time this season.
FSU’s Winston Runs Away with Heisman Trophy
Winston becomes the third Florida State player — all quarterbacks — to win college football’s most prestigious individual award, joining Chris Weinke (2000) and Charlie Ward (1993). He’s also just the second freshman to win the award, joining 2013 finalist, Texas A&M’s Johnny Manziel, who won the award last season. Winston won the award by a large margin — he received 668 first-place votes.
