Inside The Industry: Florida Sinkholes on the Verge of Being Easier to Predict
Living in a home in Florida, you have to make sure you protect your house from natural disasters with homeowner’s insurance. Although the most prominent type of disasters in South Florida are hurricanes, homeowner’s need to protect themselves from sinkholes or catastrophic ground collapse. Sinkholes take place when soil collapses into large holes caused by flowing water in underground layers of limestone. Homes or commercial buildings that have confirmed sinkhole activity will lose significant value since under Florida law.
Researchers at the University of Central Florida are devising a way to predict sinkholes. The researchers said last week that they’ve created a sinkhole simulator to help them understand what causes sinkholes. They are devising a prediction model that can predict where sinkholes are likely to occur. The researchers also are studying the relationship among sinkholes, rainfall and temperature.
State geologists are on their way to creating a statewide map showing where sinkholes are most likely to form. Last year, Florida got more than $1 million in federal funding for a three-year study. A pilot program in Columbia, Hamilton and Suwannee counties ended in May. Professionals with the Florida Geological Survey visited about 230 locations, sampling and studying the land. The Tampa Tribune reports that the fieldwork contributed to a “relative vulnerability” map that so far has proved 93 percent successful in the pilot area in predicting that sinkholes will form.
The study will move to the statewide phase, with officials planning to hire additional geologists and to reach out to local governments.
