Sports Update Monday: Dolphins Get Outplayed, Canes Impress & Stanton Out for the Year
After Impressive Patriots Win in Week 1, Dolphins Get Embarrassed By Bills in Week 2
The new-look Dolphins played like the same-old Dolphins Sunday. And the Bills sent them home with a familiar parting gift, a 29-10 drubbing that was as demoralizing as it was familiar. The loss is Miami’s third game in a row to the Bills, and eighth in its last 10 trips to Western New York. And it came with a cost: Knowshon Moreno suffered a dislocated left elbow on his first carry and is expected to be out the next four to eight weeks.
The Dolphins, to put it kindly, were historically atrocious. And it probably cost them the game. The Bills blocked a punt, the first time that’s happened to the Dolphins since 2010. Miami allowed a 102-yard kickoff return for a touchdown to C.J. Spiller, immediately after it kicked a field goal to get back into the game. And Jarvis Landry dropped a punt with the Dolphins down two scores in the fourth quarter. Now, the Dolphins’ offense must get it together without Moreno, arguably its most valuable (and intense) player.
‘Canes Freshman QB Kaaya Looks Impressive in Blowout Win Over Arkansas St.
Freshman Brad Kaaya threw for four touchdowns, set a passing record for a true freshman and led the Canes to victory as UM beat Arkansas State at home. Kaaya connected with Philip Dorsett on three long pass plays, two of which went for touchdowns as the Hurricanes defeated Arkansas State 41-20 before a paid attendance of 41,519 at Sun Life Stadium in Miami Gardens. Offensive coordinator James Coley has been under fire in recent weeks for being too vanilla in his play calling and for not allowing his quarterback to open up the offense. He satisfied the fan base in UM’s victory Saturday afternoon. The Canes dialed long distance all afternoon and the offense looked real sharp heading into next week’s battle at Nebraska.
Marlins MVP Candidate Stanton Injured After Fastball to Face, Umpires Make Situation Worse
Marlins star slugger Giancarlo Stanton was seriously injured Thursday night when he was hit in the face by a pitch from the Brewers’ Mike Fiers. After Stanton left the field, Fiers hit Reed Johnson, who was batting for Stanton, in the hand with the next pitch. That brought the Marlins out of their dugout. Miami third baseman Casey McGehee was ejected in the fracas. Fiers was not ejected. Umpires ruled Stanton and Johnson both swung at the pitches that hit them and thus were strikes. In fact, Johnson completed an inning-ending strikeout (charged to Stanton) as he was being struck. Those calls irritated Marlins’ manager Mike Redmond enough to get him tossed.
