Sports Update Monday: Dolphins Lose on Late Touchdown, Panthers Smoked in Home Opener & Nova Softball News
Dolphins Make Questionable Calls During Last-Second Heartbreaking Loss Against Packers
Rodgers executed a perfect fake-spike, extending a Packers drive and setting up a four-yard touchdown pass to Andrew Quarless with three seconds remaining to hand the Dolphins a soul-crushing 27-24 loss. The way the Dolphins (2-3) lost was soaked in irony. Most every game-defining decision Philbin made Sunday was rooted in a healthy fear that Rodgers could and would beat him, given the chance. The result: The Dolphins’ third loss in four games, and one that has led to locker-room finger-pointing for the second time in a month. Lost in the late-game drama: A second half by Tannehill that was as stellar as his first half was poor. Tannehill led the Dolphins on three touchdown drives after the intermission, including scoring passes to Jarvis Landry and Mike Wallace.
Hockey is Back…but Underwhelming in Panthers Home Opener
The Panthers — the franchise that last won an NHL playoff series in 1996 — reintroduced themselves to their fans with a numbingly bad 5-1 loss to the New Jersey Devils that left Florida 0-2 in the newborn season, after an 0-6 preseason. They announced the crowd as 11,419, the smallest gate in the franchise’s 21-season history for a home opener. That’s bad for any night, embarrassing to start your season. The Panthers look to get their first win of the season tonight, at home, against the Ottawa Senators.
Nova University Softball Defeats EFSC in Saturday Scrimmage
On the heels of a run from freshman infielder Jessie Brown, after her first career hit, the Nova Southeastern University softball team beat Eastern Florida State College in a scrimmage at noon this Saturday. The Sharks beat the Titans 4 to 1 and got the crowd at the Ad Griffin Sports Complex in Davie amped for the season opener in 2015.
