Florida Ranked 3rd in U.S. for Uninsured Residents
U.S. Census Bureau statistics released Wednesday showed a decrease in the rate of uninsured people in all 50 states and the District of Columbia. But the Sunshine State was among the top three states with the highest rates of uninsured people.
The 2014 uninsured rate in Florida was 16.6 percent, a 17 percent drop from the 20 percent uninsured rate in 2013. Overall, there were 3.2 million uninsured people in Florida at the close of 2014, a drop from 3.9 million at the close of 2013, according to the Census Bureau.
South Florida had the most signups among major metropolitan areas in states using the HealthCare.gov platform in the 2015 open enrollment period, and the drop in the rate of uninsured in the state illuminates the success of the ACA, or Obamacare, in reducing the rates of uninsured.
Overall, the number of uninsured people in the United States fell from 45.2 million to 36.7 million between 2013 and 2014, according to the Census Bureau. While Florida’s 17 percent decrease in the rate of uninsured is significant, Nevada saw a bigger drop. Texas and Nevada were the only two states in 2013 with uninsured rate’s higher than Florida’s 20 percent. Nevada dropped the rate of uninsured from 20.7 percent in 2013 to 15.2 percent in 2014, representing a 27 percent decrease. Texas was less successful, dropping the rate of uninsured from 22.1 percent in 2013 to 19.1 in 2014.
