Sports Update Monday: Fins Get New Coach & Panthers Win Twelve Straight!
Gase Hired as New Dolphins Head Coach
The Dolphins got their man this past Saturday. After firing previous head coach Joe Philbin at the beginning of this season, the Dolphins agreed to terms with former Philadelphia Eagles offensive coordinator Adam Gase making him their head coach for the next five years. Gase, 37, has never been a head coach before, but Dolphins owner Stephen Ross has tied his reputation to Gase and even gave him say over the final roster. Gase is known in league circles as a “quarterback guru” and Dolphins ownership and fans are hoping he can use his knowledge to craft Dolphins current QB Ryan Tannehill into an elite-level player.
Panthers Win Twelve Straight Games
After knocking of the Edmonton Oilers last night, the Florida Panthers have now won twelve straight hockey games in a row! That’s the longest win streak in franchise history and only five games away from the NHL record 17 games set by the Pittsburgh Penguins in 1993. The Panthers last loss was almost one full month ago. They currently sit atop the Atlantic division with 56 points. Led by youngsters Aleksander Barkov and Jonathan Huberdeau with veterans like Roberto Luongo and Jaromir Jagr, the Panthers look for lucky number 13 tonight at 10:00pm against the Vancouver Canucks.
College Football National Championship Tonight
Tonight marks the second ever BCS National Championship Playoff between the #1 University of Clemson Tigers and the #2 University of Alabama Crimson Tide. Although Clemson is the underdog for tonight’s match-up, the Tigers have been undefeated all season and look to stay perfect. On the other hand, Alabama’s one loss of this season came when their starting QB did not play and they are coming off an impressive shut-out win against #4 Michigan State. The game kicks off at 8:30pm tonight with Clemson looking to win their first title since 1981 and Alabama looking to win their fourth title in 7 years.
