Unusual Tornado Wreaks Havoc in South Florida
And you thought hurricane season was over? Just last week, a tornado picked up a southbound vehicle on Florida’s Turnpike near Fort Lauderdale Wednesday morning and dropped it in the northbound lane as a line of severe storms hit the area. Officials said the storms tossed cars and trucks, knocked down trees and damaged some roofs in south Florida.
Broward Fire Rescue said that one person was hurt on the turnpike and didn’t know how many vehicles were overturned in the area. The southbound lanes were closed for a quite some time north of Fort Lauderdale.
In addition, at least six cars were damaged in the parking lot at the nearby north campus of Broward College. The college issued an advisory in an email urging students to take precautions shortly before the storm.
Miami television stations showed video of numerous downed trees, downed power lines, and minor roof damage to condominiums and other buildings. The National Weather Service issued a tornado warning for parts of Broward and Palm Beach counties last week. The agency confirmed later Wednesday evening that the area had been hit by a tornado.
For those thinking that you only need Windstorm insurance coverage during Hurricane season only…think again! The weather is as bi-polar as it’s ever been and you don’t want to be uncovered (literally) when the weather gets bad. Windstorm coverage should be in effect year-round because of “off-peak” storms (outside of hurricane season) that happen in the area exactly like the tornado from last week.
