Report Shows 370,000 Children in Florida aren’t Covered by Insurance
Florida Healthy Kids’ 2015 report was released, revealing new information about eligibility and costs. “As evidenced by this annual report, this past year presented a series of changes, challenges and accomplishments within an evolving health insurance environment,” Matthews said in the news release. “Our state continues to make significant strides in reducing the number of uninsured children, with Florida KidCare as the foundation.”
Florida Healthy Kids is part of Florida KidCare, which is composed of four programs that cover children until they reach the end of age 18. However, more than 370,000 children remain uninsured. “Many of these uninsured children are eligible for subsidized health insurance for as little as $15 or $20 a month—or even nothing at all,” the 2015 report states.”In fact, according to 2014 U.S. Census Bureau data, approximately 230,000 Florida children under age 18 are likely to be eligible for subsidized coverage but are not enrolled…That number could approach 250,000 when uninsured 18-year-olds, who could also be covered through Medicaid or CHIP until the end of age 18, are included.”
