Sinkhole Leads to Evacuations in Florida’s West Coast
A sinkhole some 100 feet wide opened up Wednesday morning in Tarpon Springs, Florida, forcing the evacuation of several nearby residents. The large hole was reported near U.S. 19 at Mango Street, according to Fox 13 News. Water and sewer lines were ruptured by the sinkhole adjacent to the Tarpon Shores Mobile Home Park, the report added. Officials estimated the sinkhole is 60 feet deep, but water has filled the hole up to about 10 feet below the surface, ABC Action News reported.
No injuries have been reported, and the evacuation order affected about 20 people from six homes, according to the Tampa Bay Times. Sinkholes are a relatively common occurrence in Tarpon Springs and elsewhere in central Florida. The state’s Department of Environmental Protection believes they’ve been a big part of Florida’s ever-changing landscape for many years, but the increase in population has made sightings more frequent in recent decades.
